Services Available 24/7 to Survivors of Sexual Violence and Loved Ones
March 11, 2020—Today, Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison for his rape and criminal sex act convictions.
“Weinstein’s near-maximum sentence sends an important message to survivors that abuse of power and sexual violence will not be tolerated,” says Helen Archontou, MSW, LSW, CEO of YWCA Northern New Jersey. “While no punishment can erase the impact of a perpetrator’s actions on a person’s life, justice served shows respect for the courage of those who came forward, and lets survivors know: We believe you.”
YWCA Northern New Jersey healingSPACE, Bergen County’s only Sexual Violence Resource Center, is available 24/7 with free, confidential hotline services (201-487-2227) for survivors and their families to help them navigate the trauma of sexual violence and its aftermath. Confidential Sexual Violence Advocates provide individual counseling, facilitate support groups, and accompany survivors through medical, legal, and other proceedings associated with sexual violence. healingSPACE also offers legal advocacy services and access to legal services to survivors of sexual violence in partnership with Northeast NJ Legal Services.
