YWCA Bergen County’s CEO Helen Archontou has been appointed to serve on New Jersey’s Task Force on Campus Sexual Assault. The bill creating the task force is a response to growing concern of sexual assault incidents on college campuses across the country. According to the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault one in five women is sexually assaulted in college.
The first meeting of the 12-member task force is scheduled for Wednesday, June 22, 2016.
The Task Force is charged with studying and making recommendations concerning sexual assault on campus. Archontou, a licensed social worker, has spent her career working on child protection issues including a stint in the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes/Child Abuse unit.
Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle—the bill’s sponsor in the lower house—put Archontou’s name forward for the post.
“It was my pleasure to recommend that Helen Archontou be appointed to the Task Force on Campus Sexual Assault. Helen has been a transformative leader as the CEO of the YWCA in Bergen County helping the organization to continue to grow and thrive. Her expertise and leadership will be an invaluable asset to the Task Force and I look forward to reviewing the results of their hard work,” Assemblywoman Huttle said.
“I am honored and gratified to be included in this important project, “said Archontou. “We at YWCA Bergen County have been on the forefront of creating awareness around this threat and in activating innovative ways to help protect college students.”
Last month YWCA Bergen County healingSPACE, Bergen County’s only designated sexual violence resource center, unveiled a breakthrough innovation, the YW healingSPACE mobile application. It is one of New Jersey’s first and only mobile applications to connect users directly to a New Jersey-based sexual violence resource center.
The healingSPACE App provides local and national resources including a list of Bergen County’s SART hospitals (hospitals that provide the service of an evidence collection kit) as well as the ability to directly connect to the 24-hour healingSPACE hotline number.
