“The Heart that gives, gathers.” -Marianne Moore, American Poet
When we pose this question, we’re really asking two things: what makes you want to physically move? At YWCA Bergen County we have a full menu of options to get you active and engaged in fitness, from Zumba to barre, to yoga and swimming. It’s all here and our experienced, professional instructors will show you the way to vibrant health and fitness.
But the question, “what moves you?” is more than skin, muscle and bone deep. It’s the undeniable spark. You know it when you find it and there’s nothing like it. The cause, the subject, the story that makes you want to make a difference.
I found my answer here at YWCA Bergen County and there’s a good chance you will too.
When I began my work at YWCA Bergen County in October, I didn’t fully grasp the scope of the organization. While I knew it offered excellent fitness classes; that it boasted gorgeous pools, and facilities; and that it was driven by a mighty mission: eliminating racism and empowering women; I didn’t realize to what lengths the organization was going to fulfill that mission.
What I discovered astounded and inspired me. The YWCA is one of the nation’s oldest human rights organization, founded in 1858 and has been in the forefront of most major movements in the United States as a pioneer in race relations, labor union representation, and the empowerment of women.
YWCA Bergen County came along 95 years ago thanks to someone named Nell Doremus. Nell, born and raised in Ridgewood, was an avid advocate for safe affordable housing, better working conditions, and improved wages for young women in industry. In 1920, as a leader of a group called the “Girls Patriotic League,” Nell applied to the national YWCA and received a charter to form the YWCA chapter that is now YWCA Bergen County.
Again, upon this foundation—today—our organization works tirelessly to fulfill a profound mission: eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.
As this is my first Giving Tuesday as Development and Communications Director at YWCA Bergen County, I want to share examples with you of how we at YWCA Bergen County are living our mission every day. I hope you will click here to read on and consider the question: what moves you? Then please make a Giving Tuesday gift to us.
Our programs rely on your generosity. Please consider giving back by donating your time (as a volunteer) or money to YWCA Bergen County. By doing so, your Giving Tuesday contribution will make a direct impact on the women, children and families in your community!
