It’s December already (can you believe it?), which puts us in the midst of holiday planning season. Savvy marketers have long since finalized their overall marketing plans for the season. Did you?
Is your website and marketing plan ready for the holiday season?
If your marketing efforts are successful, you’ll have lots of new visitors making their way to your website. This is your chance to interact with them and to get them to actually take the next step with you.
Here are 4 things to do this week on your website to make sure your site serves you as good as it can throughout the season to come.
1. Simplify – People have a lot of choices during this season. Your goal is to make sure that they get everything they need and want on your home page in less than 3 seconds. How? Imagine someone is arriving on your site for the first time, and they’re in a bit of a rush because they’re doing a lot of online shopping this time of year. Re-examine your navigation – is it clear and easy to use? How about your featured items and services? Can your visitors tell what it is that you want them to do on your site?
2. Optimize your content for search – As a small business owner, it is hard for us to compete with the big companies for the general terms like “Holiday Gifts”. Therefore, you need to think about your specific products or services and write down the terms you think people might search for that could lead them to you.
For example: if you are a in the candle making business and you live in New Jersey, then your keywords should be “Handmade candles in New Jersey.” Once you have a good list of key phrases, check your ideas in Google’s Keyword Planner and see how many searches are being done for those terms. It’s free to use; you just need to have an AdWords account.
Your next step is to embed those phrases on your website, and there are a couple of places you can embed them.
1. In a blog post
2. In a page URL
3. In an image name
3. Make sure your details are correct everywhere – If you have a promotion going on, check the dates, check the promo code, make sure all of your contact and location information is correct.
Next, check the same information on places like Yelp, Google Local, Yahoo! Local and your social media profiles. Don’t fumble it by making it harder for people who’ve decided to shop with you to find your store.
If you have new product ideas, take some great photos and put them up for sale. Consider adding gift cards and gift certificates for products or services you offer. This is also a great time to update all of your product descriptions, since fresh content will get re-crawled by Google and may help you rank better in searches.
4. Add some love! – It’s the holidays! It’s the time to share the love and fun with your prospects.
How? Dress up your logo with some ornaments or dreidels, change your profile image or add a special message for the holidays.
There are lots of plugins and widgets out there that you can use to share the spirit of the holidays. From snowflakes and a countdown clock to a message from Santa.
The idea is to make your site’s visitors and prospects feel welcome on your site.
Follow these steps and you’ll be in great shape for the holiday season.
